Welcome to Ara Apothecary
WELCOME
You're in the right place
Whether you found us through The Beauty Within or TCM Aesthetics, welcome. Ara Apothecary is one home for everything Dr. Lydia trusts outside the treatment room: clean skincare, gua sha and cupping tools, in-clinic rituals, gift cards, and the professional tools she uses and teaches with.
WHY THIS SHOP EXISTS
Medicine I grew up with
I grew up with Traditional Chinese Medicine as everyday medicine. When I was a little girl, my mother took me to the herbalist before she ever took me to the pharmacy, and my grandmother's quiet, dignified way of caring for herself stayed with me. When I left engineering for medicine, it felt less like a career change and more like coming home.
Almost twenty years ago, I already knew I wanted to create skincare rooted in TCM someday. This shop is part of that dream. Every product here is something I would choose for my own family and my own patients. If I wouldn't put it on my own face, you won't find it here.

THE FOUNDATION
So, what is TCM?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete system of medicine, practiced and refined for more than two thousand years. It includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, gua sha, cupping, nutrition and lifestyle guidance.
What makes TCM different is how it sees you: not as separate parts, but as one connected whole. Your sleep, digestion, stress and emotions are all part of the same story, and your skin is often the first place that story shows up. True radiance begins within.
Five ideas you'll hear us talk about
-
氣 Qi
qì · vital energy
The energy that moves through and animates the body. When qi flows smoothly, skin tends to look bright and alive. When it feels stuck or depleted, we often see it in the face first.
-
陰陽 Yin and Yang
yīn yáng · balance of opposites
Rest and activity, cooling and warming, moisture and warmth. Health in TCM is about keeping these in gentle balance rather than pushing hard in one direction.
-
經絡 Meridians
jīng luò · channels
Pathways that carry qi throughout the body, including many across the face. That's why a facial treatment can leave your whole body feeling calmer.
-
五行 Five Elements
wǔ xíng · five phases
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water connect the seasons, our organs and our emotions, and help explain why your skin changes from summer to winter.
-
面診 Face Reading
miàn zhěn · facial diagnosis
In TCM, the face is a map. We treat what the face reveals, not just what it shows.
IN THE TREATMENT ROOM
How TCM cares for your skin
Facial acupuncture
Very fine needles that support circulation, tone and your skin's own natural renewal, as part of a whole-body treatment.
Gua sha (刮痧, guā shā, "scraping")
Gentle strokes with a smooth stone to help move fluid and release tension in the face and neck.
Cupping (拔罐, bá guàn, "cupping")
Soft suction that lifts the tissue to refresh circulation and ease tightness.
Herbs and botanicals
Ingredients like safflower, pearl and reishi have been treasured for skin for centuries, and they inspire many of the products we love.
Questions we hear often
Does facial acupuncture hurt?
The needles we use are extremely fine, much thinner than the needles used for shots. Most people feel very little, and many patients find the treatment so relaxing that they drift off to sleep.
How many treatments will I need?
TCM works gradually, with your body rather than against it. We usually recommend starting with a treatment series to help your body find its balance, then continuing with regular maintenance visits. We'll create a plan that fits you at your first visit.
How are acupuncturists trained?
Licensed acupuncturists complete three to four years of full-time graduate training after a bachelor's degree, plus thousands of hours of supervised clinical work. Aesthetic acupuncture requires additional advanced training on top of that, so it's always worth asking about your practitioner's background.
Can I buy treatments online?
Yes. Treatment series and gift cards can be purchased here and are enjoyed in person at The Beauty Within in North Tustin. After your purchase, we'll reach out to schedule, or you can book anytime online.
